Dissection of a fish

We have an annual tradition in our fifth grade. Dr. Tony Amandi and Ms. Leslie Lindsay, who work for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, visit us to dissect fish and teach us about fish anatomy.

Trout ready to be cut open.

First we examine and learn about the external features of fish. In this case a trout.

Using scissors, students start the first cut from the anus all the way to the mouth.

Viewing the internal anatomy through the first incision.

Here, a student is inspecting the internal anatomy through the first incision to see if the cut was deep enough.

To get a better look at the internal organs another cut is made to remove more tissue.

After this final cut, the organs are removed and identified. The simple anatomy diagram below identifies the names and positions of several fish parts.
