Dissection of a wasp hive
24 Nov 2006 One of my students brought in a wasp hive he found in his yard. After keeping the hive in a deep freezer for two weeks, we opened it up to explore the contents. Note: Clicking on photographs opens an enlarged version in a popup window. As you can see, the wasp paper comb resembles the honeycomb made by bees. Below is a view of the hive paper magnified 100 times. The pupating Both the photos above are of a wasp wing. The left image is magnified 40 times while the one on the right is magnified 400 times. Wasp eye magnified 100 times. Notice the insert shows the hexagonal shape of the cones in the compound eye which look like the paper nests they build. |
