Closer look at original data indicates fraud
4 Jun 2006
The original experiment's web page posted pictures as evidence. If you take the Day 1 and Day 5 photographs and superimpose them, as in the the picture below, you see that the evidence appears to be falsified. Mahatma Cane Jives, a forum member I came across in my searching, posted similar pictures in one of the forums I visited. I replicated his process and agree with his conclusion: this experimental evidence is most likely fraudulent. Note that the control plant (right) matches perfectly; yet, after five days, the leaves should have moved. The plant on the left is missing leaves, but the remaining leaves also match. The pruning appears to have occurred within a few minutes. Also, by pruning the leaves, I feel that the experiment's integrity was compromised.
Day 2
Day 1
Above are the original day 1 and day 5 photos. As you can see, it states on the day one photo that the plants are pruned to show new growth. This allows for excess pruning on the experimenter's part, especially if the experimenter is leaning toward a desired conclusion. Unfortunately, I think zeal may not have been the only factor because of the exact match of leaves in photographs that were supposedly taken five days apart. This, however, does not mean having students replicate the experiment is a waste of time. On the contrary, I believe it is an excellent exercise in showing how science is self-correcting and thorough. |
